Greece’s diverse landscapes have been chosen to be a major “character” in many films. However, Mykonos is kind of a Hollywood star! Here’s our list of some of our favorite movies set in Mykonos.
The Greek Tycoon (1978)
The Greek Tycoon is a 1978 American drama film which is loosely based on the life of Aristotle Onassis and his relationship with Jacqueline Kennedy. The storyline focuses on the courtship and marriage of an aging Greek shipping magnate, who rose from his humble upbringing to be become a business tycoon, an influential man who longs to be elected president of Greece. The leading lady is an assassinated president’s widow. The film stars Anthony Quinn as the title role and Jacqueline Bissett as the tycoon’s lover and wife.
While it didn’t end up being an acclaimed film, the setting of Mykonos was noted as stunning by many critics at the time. The film also features scenes in the Greek capital of Athens and Corfu island.
Shirley Valentine (1989)
The award-winning British romantic comedy drama film Shirley Valentine is considered a romantic holiday classic. The screenplay by Willy Russell is based on his 1986 one-character play of the same title. The story follows the middle aged Shirley Valentine who goes through an unexpected self-discovery after her best friend wins a vacation for two to Greece. They go together and end up on Mykonos island. Shirley’s best friend ends up abandoning her for a fling, so Shirley is forced to go out on her own. Her life changes after she meets a Greek taverna owner.
The lead role is played by Pauline Collins, an actress who played in the stage production in London’s West End and on Broadway. Tom Conti plays Costas Dimitriades, the owner of a Greek taverna. Much of the film is shot on beautiful Agios Ioannis (St. John) beach.
The Bourne Identity (2002)
Starring the fantastic Matt Damon, this action packed American-German spy action thriller includes scenes from Mykonos. In The Bourne Identity, which was followed by several blockbuster Bourne movies based on the novels by Robert Ludlum, the lead character Bourne finally tracks down the leading lady of the story, Marie, to the Greek island of Mykonos. In Mykonos, Maria is found running a scooter rental business in Little Venice, beneath the island’s famous windmills.
The Kings of Mykonos (2010)
This is the latest of the movies shot on Mykonos. The storyline revolves around a man named Steve who inherits a very valuable stretch of Greek beach from an uncle he has never met. Drama ensues from there. The Kings of Mykonos was shot in many areas of the island. One of the most memorable is a lively Greek dance performance that takes place in Little Venice.
